In the last 20 years or so, we’ve gone from not having heard of hypnotherapy in a big way to there being numerous hypnotherapists in every town in the country.  People are much more relaxed about the possibility of using a hypnotherapist to help them overcome whatever is stopping them from enjoying their life and most people will know someone who has tried it at some point.

So what is hypnotherapy and how does it help?  Many people are aware of stage hypnotism and worry that it may be the same.  The truth is that in some ways it is exactly the same.  It’s using the power of your subconscious mind to change how you feel about something.  In entertainment terms, that means that the person who has allowed themselves to be hypnotized for entertainment purposes is willing to accept the suggestions given to them by the hypnotist.

In hypnotherapy terms, it’s the same principle.  The client is allowing themselves to enter a state of hypnosis through guided relaxation and accept suggestions to help them to feel better about a situation. Hypnosis allows the hypnotherapist to bypass the Conscious Critical Faculty (CCF) which acts as a filter in only allowing information that is in line with your current belief system so that you can create a new belief system, so enabling you to achieve change at a subconscious level.  This changes your inner way of thinking and feeling about a situation.

An example would be someone who has a fear of flying.  If your inner belief is that flying is dangerous then the CCF will filter out anything to the contrary, only allowing through thoughts that are congruent with your inner belief i.e. flying is dangerous, I may die.  It’s safer not to fly.  Bypassing your CCF means that you can allow new thoughts through to the subconscious such as flying is one of the safest ways to travel.  Flying takes me to nice places.  I’m so chilled and relaxed when I fly.

By using the benefits of being in hypnosis, you allow a change in how you feel through a variety of ways including positive suggestions and visualizations.  It doesn’t matter if you’re not a visual person, the same result is obtained through connecting with what you’d hear or how you’d feel in the situation so it suits all modalities.

Using hypnosis is a very beneficial way of directly accessing the subconscious mind so that the new beliefs about yourself are embedded and feel a natural part of you.
