How Counselling can help me?
When you feel that something in your life is stopping you from moving forward, it can cause a ripple effect through other areas in your life. Counselling is simply a safe place to talk through your problems or concerns in a confidential setting without fear of being judged. You are free to talk about anything that is troubling you and find your own solutions. I don’t give advice or opinions, I listen to what you want to say and then we can gently explore where those feelings come from, how you’ve coped in the past and how you want to change that in the future.
I work from a multi-model perspective so if it’s relevant to work in the past, then we will go there but if your problems are very much in the present, then that’s where we will concentrate most of the work. Our sessions together are very much led by you so if you’re nervous about seeing someone and disclosing your inner-most thoughts then let me reassure you that you can take things at your own pace. I’ll listen, question your thoughts to allow you to dig deeper and make suggestions if I think something may help but I’ll never tell you what you should think or do and you’re always the focus of the session.
If you’re wondering if now is the right time; perhaps because ‘things aren’t that bad’ or you’re worried about what people will think (‘things must be really bad if she’s seeing a Counsellor!’) then let’s look at it another way. Do you see a dentist only when you have tooth-ache or do you have regular check-ups to ensure any problems don’t get too bad? You can look at counselling in the same way. If something is bothering you, think how much easier it will be to talk it through when it’s at a manageable level rather than waiting until it feels overwhelming? You can think about it as part of your self-care to help keep you at your best. Things certainly don’t need to be really bad to take some time and focus on yourself and as everything is completely confidential, then other peoples opinions don’t matter because they don’t need to know.
If you’re not sure if it’s for you, have a look at An interview with Catherine to see if it answers your questions and if you’re still unsure or to make an appointment, please feel free to call me on 07811 907911 or email me at: catherine@berkshiretherapist.co.uk and I’ll guide you through how it works.
