Most women have suffered with period pain at some point in their lives. For some it’s a mild inconvenience. For others, it’s full on leaving you doubled up in pain, cuddling a hot water bottle and reaching for your pain killers, chocolate and the remote control to get you through.
Period pain is an unnecessary part of menstruation and therefore serves no purpose. It is caused by the contraction of the uterus (womb) to help shed the lining each month. The same feeling you experience during childbirth where contractions are much stronger to help prepare your body to give birth to your baby. In terms of your period, the effort to expel the lining is much less. The body doesn’t need to experience pain in the same way. You can use the power of your subconscious mind to agree that period pain is an unnecessary part of having periods.
How can my mind help me manage my pain?
Although you experience pain in the area of your body that it’s pertaining to, it actually goes through a complex system of nerves. The pain that you experience, no matter where it originates from, comes from the brain. The brain has to work out how much pain you need to experience depending on its perception of the severity of the situation. Sometimes it over-compensates for various reasons. This means that pain can sometimes be more severe than it needs to be or even exist at all.
There can be exceptions to this due to some medical conditions where pain is a necessary signal. If you’re experiencing severe period pain or heavy bleeding, always see your GP to exclude other causes. You can find more information here
